As well as carrying out the full range of statutory medicals, Abermed can create individually tailored medicals. Medical assessments can be carried out at our own medical centres or onsite. Abermed offers standardisation across the UK and has the capacity to carry out large numbers of medicals with easy availability, including online booking. Our extensive network of third party medical providers gives coverage across the whole of the UK. Abermed also carries out medicals for international health care providers who do not have medical centres in Scotland. Communicating results quickly and accurately is of course a key part of the service and we now offer online certificates, faxed certificates and telephone confirmation of failed medicals, alcohol tests or non‐negative drug screens. Offshore MedicalsOGUK Offshore Medicals (formerly known as UKOOA) You will need to pass an Offshore Medical Examination if you wish to work offshore. The OKUK Offshore Medical is valid for two years and allows you to work in the UK sector or the North Sea. An OGUK Offshore Medical at Abermed consists of the following:
Norwegian MedicalThe Norwegian Medical is very similar to the OGUK Offshore Medical and allows you to work in Norwegian waters. The Norwegian Certificate can be issued at the same time as an OGUK. Netherlands MedicalThe NOGEPA (Netherlands Oil and Gas Exploration and Production Association) Offshore Medical allows you to work in UK, Norwegian or Dutch sectors of the North Sea. ERT MedicalsMembers of Emergency Response Teams (ERT) require a level of fitness which is assessed by an initial ERT Medical Examination. The initial ERT Medical is similar to the OGUK Offshore Medical with the addition of an ERT Health Review, Spirometry (lung function test) and a Fitness Test (Chester Step). An annual review including Spirometry (lung function test) and a Fitness Test (Chester Step) is required. Diving MedicalsProfessional DiversAccording to the Diving at Work Regulations 1997, all professional divers must have a valid certificate of medical fitness to dive, issued by an HSE Approved Medical Examiner of Divers. The certificate of medical fitness to dive is valid up to a maximum of 12 months. For the initial HSE Diving Medical Examination it is necessary to bring with you a completed health questionnaire which can be found in Annex A on Page 22 of the HSE (Health and Safety Executive) leaflet ‘The Medical Examination and Assessment of Divers (MA1)’ which is found at www.hse.gov.uk/diving/information.htm Sports DiversSports Divers are required to undergo routine medicals in an effort to maintain the safety of diving in the UK. For more information relating to the Diving industry please see the HSE (Health and Safety Executive) website at www.hse.gov.uk/diving Seafarers Medicals (ENG1)ENG1 Seafarers Medicals are the main medical fitness certification for those who work at sea. An MCA (Marine and Coastguard Agency) approved doctor is required to issue the ENG1 certificate after a full medical has taken place. For more information please see able on the MCA’s website at www.mcga.gov.uk Drivers MedicalsHGV/LGV MedicalsThe Medical takes around an hour to complete including completing a questionnaire followed by an eye test, blood pressure measurement, urine test and a full physical examination of heart, lungs, circulation, nervous system, musculoskeletal system and abdomen. After the Medical has taken place, a D4 form is completed ready to return to the DVLA. The patient will be informed of any abnormal findings which could affect the issue or renewal of the license. Fork Lift Truck Drivers MedicalsIt is good practice for Fork Lift Truck Drivers to have Medical Assessments on a regular basis to ensure that they are fit for the work they do. Abermed can carry out the relevant Medical which usually involves a hearing test, eye test, screening and a consultation with a nurse. Network Rail MedicalsAbermed is Link-Up approved to carry out the following medical services for Contractors working on the railway infrastructure for Network Rail:
Crane Operators MedicalsPeople whose employment entails working in confined spaces may require a Medical which involves screening (with particular reference to eyes), audiogram (hearing test) and a consultation with a doctor. Crane operators working offshore must hold an OGUK Offshore Certificate. For more information regarding ‘Safety Critical Workers’ please see the HSE website www.hse.gov.uk/construction/healthrisks/workers.htm Climbers MedicalsPeople whose work entails climbing such as Industrial Abseilers may require a Medical to check their fitness for the specific work. The Abermed Climbers Medical involves screening, a grip strength test, a fitness test (Chester Step) and a consultation with a doctor. Confined Space MedicalsPeople whose employment entails working in confined spaces may require a Medical to check their fitness for the specific work. The Abermed Confined Space Medical involves screening, spirometry (lung function test), audiogram (hearing test) and a consultation with a doctor. Ionising Radiation MedicalsWorking with RadiationPersonnel who have had significant exposure to Ionising Radiation due to work activities in the nuclear industry; medical and dental practice; manufacturing; construction; engineering; paper; offshore drilling; education (colleges, schools) and non-destructive testing must have an initial IR Medical Assessment followed annually by either a Medical Assessment or a Paper Review. For more information regarding Asbestos please see the HSE (Health and Safety Executive) website www.hse.gov.uk/asbestos/information.htm Food Handlers MedicalsFood Handlers Medicals are carried out for personnel working in the catering industry onshore or offshore. Catering medicals are very similar to OGUK Offshore Medicals but are more in depth and include examination of skin, ears, eyes and throat. A faeces sample is sent to the laboratory to be tested for parasites or enteric pathogens. Insurance MedicalsAbermed can carry out Insurance Medicals according to the screenings required. Abermed will ensure that all health questionnaires and accompanying paperwork is correctly completed and returned to the particular Insurance Company. Medicals for specific countries, such as Kuwait or Saudi ArabiaAbermed can provide Medical Assessments for entry to work within particular countries. These Medicals vary according to the country required but can involve screening, completing a medical questionnaire, drug screening, blood screening, urine screening, stool screening and a consultation with a doctor. Lead MedicalsExposure to lead can lead to kidney problems and/or brain and nerve damage. A Lead Medical will involve the taking of blood to test for lead levels and a consultation with a doctor. Standard Clinical Medicals
Pre-Employment MedicalsPre-employment assessments are used to ensure that the potential employee has no pre-existing ill health or disability that make the performance of the proposed job difficult or unsafe for the individual, co-workers or third parties e.g. visitors or young people. The outcome of such an assessment could advise managers on the needs of individuals with physical and mental impairments, in keeping with the Equality Act 2010. Abermed provides a wide range of tailored pre-employment assessments. These assessments can vary from questionnaires to full medicals (may include drug and alcohol screenings) which provide health surveillance baselines, pre-employment certificates and other industry specific certificates. |
