Dr Philip Bryson

Abermed Limited is delighted to announce the recent appointment of  Dr Philip Bryson as Medical Director of Diving Services.            Dr Bryson will be working with Dr Chris Schenk supporting the diving doctors across Abermed as well as advising all our diving clients while he reviews the future of our worldwide diving services in conjunction with International SOS.

Dr Bryson is a widely recognised and influential authority in diving medicine and has published extensively in specialist medical journals. He has joined Abermed from a Medical Director position with the Diving Diseases Research Centre in Plymouth.

Dr Bryson was born in Nigeria and graduated from Bristol University Medical School and went on to work within various fields of medicine before training as a GP.  Dr Bryson had originally started diving as a hobby and his growing enthusiasm went on to inspire him to take up diving medicine.

Dr Bryson started with Abermed early in December and immediately hit the ground running. Initially he met with Abermed’s Chairman, James Miller in London and also spent some time with International SOS.    Dr Bryson then travelled up to Aberdeen for his company induction and got to know Abermed and the staff based locally.  He will be gradually visiting all of the Abermed locations but will be spending more time in Aberdeen and Great Yarmouth as these have the strongest diving connections.   Dr Bryson has been making contact with local diving clients and has already visited two vessels at the harbour in Aberdeen to introduce himself and get a feel for the working environment.

Dr Bryson has recently returned from attending a prestigious conference in Norway. The Conference was entitled Man in Extreme Environments - Applied Physiology From Subsea to Space and was organised to honour a fellow expert in diving medicine,Professor Alf O Brubakk of NTNU, Trondheim. Dr Bryson found the event very rigorous but extremely interesting and also managed to carry out some useful networking.  Dr Bryson felt that he made some valuable contacts as well as enjoying a stimulating conference.

Dr Bryson has close links with the medical team at the National Hyperbaric Centre in Aberdeen and looks forward to continuing this association.

Dr Bryson is helping Abermed’s Diving Doctors gain more experience and enhance their diving medicine capabilities.  His obvious enthusiasm will no doubt encourage others to take an interest in this particular field of medicine. He is currently exploring the opportunities for providing training courses in diving medicine.

Dr Bryson has a smallholding in Devon where his wife and two daughters run their own equestrian facility - however Dr Bryson finds himself more likely to be mucking out and feeding the horses rather than riding them.
