Abermed Launches New Service

The Abermed Weight Management Programme

weight management

Obesity continues to represent a major risk to the future of Scotland’s working population.  Recent studies undertaken by the Department of Health have suggested that weight problems currently cost the wider U.K economy approximately £16 billion per year. This figure could rise to £50 billion per year by 2050.

This week (2–8 November) marks National Obesity week. This year’s campaign is focusing on encouraging as many people as possible to take an honest look at their weight and consider how it affects their current physical condition. One of the simplest ways to find out if you are overweight is to measure your BMI (Body Mass Index).

BMI can be used by Doctors and Health Professionals to assess if someone’s weight is putting their health at risk.  Your BMI is calculated by dividing your weight (in kg) by your height squared (in meters). Obesity is known to increase the chance of developing various health conditions, such as Heart disease / strokes, raised blood pressure, Type 2 Diabetes and Cancer.

Abermed have invested over £15,000 in the development of an innovative scheme aimed at helping people achieve, and maintain, a healthy and controlled weight loss.

The Abermed Weight Management Programme makes use of a qualified psychotherapist and a dietitian and aims to alter a person’s attitude to food, whilst also providing a valuable insight into nutritional requirements.  These two elements help a person to achieve healthy and sustainable weight loss.

Abermed has found that 29% of those who attended its UK-wide centres in the past year are considered to be obese.  This a key concern to Abermed’s Registered Dietitian, Toby Donnelly who states that:

“These figures highlight a significant problem  regarding obesity in the current workforce.  It is well documented that people who are overweight or obese have more poor physical and psychological health - leading to an increased risk of chronic conditions that can lead to an increase in sickness absence, long-term incapacity or early retirement, as well as more accidents and injuries at work. We are delighted to offer the Abermed Weight Management Programme in line with National Obesity week, as this will further aid our clients to actively help improve the health and wellbeing of their employees”.

The programme is being delivered in Aberdeen by qualified and experienced health professionals, Abermed’s Registered Dietitian, Toby Donnelly, and Cognitive Behavioural Psychotherapist, Jamie Patterson. Click here for further information on the programme.
