Budding young radio presenters quiz Abermed health expert
Sunday, 29 June 2008 00:00

Children from Cornhill Primary School quizzed a doctor from Abermed on their own health-themed radio show on Thursday 5 June.

The weekly Reading Bus show is broadcast every Thursday morning on community radio station shmuFM.

As well as being grilled by the youngsters on issues such as how to stay safe in the sun, Dr Euan Thompson also became a Reading Champion after sharing a favourite piece of writing with listeners.

The P7 pupils had been working with the Reading Bus’ health co-ordinator Sheila Lawtie, who was also a guest on the show.

Abermed is a regular sponsor of the Reading Bus health project, which aims to educate school children in the St Machar area and their families on issues affecting their health, such as fitness and eating well.

Dr Thompson, a Director and Consultant Occupational Physician at Abermed, discussed his work, which includes providing medical and health services to the oil and gas industry as well as a range of other businesses.

He talked about his favourite books and authors and read an extract from a favourite piece.

Dr Thompson said: “I am delighted to have been invited to appear on the Reading Bus radio show as a special guest”.

“The pupils have been looking at sun safety and how important it is to make sure you don’t get burnt, so we’ll be chatting about that. At Abermed we also specialise in travel health and have travel clinics which are open to members of the public so they can get all the proper vaccinations they need before they go abroad on holiday or for work.

“We are lucky enough to live in a relatively disease free country so it’s easy to forget that vaccinations are essential for travel to many parts of the world, including some bits of Europe.”

Launched in 2006, the Reading Bus is a custom-built bus which travels round schools, community centres and playgroups in the St Machar area of Aberdeen and is intended to stimulate children’s interest in reading and literature.

It is also used for family learning and is designed to be less intimidating than a traditional classroom for parents who may have literacy difficulties.

Station House Media Unit (shmu) is a community media unit that supports residents in regeneration areas in Aberdeen, with the aim of giving residents the chance to get involved in radio and video production and traditional and online publications, and digital access.

Its radio station broadcasts a variety of issue-based, music and community programming, including the weekly Reading Bus show.
